for the first step of this tutorial i'm going to set up the base colors if you press q you can paint in a selection i use a basic brush and i set the hardness to 100 what i'm doing is i'm creating a selection around the whole head so that, that way i can create a layer mask and i'll set the layer mask under group when i start creating layer mask inside that group the colors will only fit within his face
when you're done painting the selection i would go back and check to see if you miss any places if you click the layer mask thumbnail there should be an option invert it when your painting on layer mask black erases the image and white is like transparent so you can see the image underneath and gray is like 50 shades of opacity i'm going to add some light blue to the tips of his hair and blend it up
for the shadows i'll use a dark green so when your blending colors you want to set up photoshop to change opacity depending on your pen pressure and then you use the eye dropper tool it doesn't exactly work the same as traditional painting but still when you lower opacity the colors underneath will show through for the highlights i'm going to use a light purple and green that almost looks white but not quite
even if your painting really vibrant hair it's important to have some dark tones to give more defeth otherwise it will look flat this is a character i created i haven't thought of his name so if you have any suggestions leave it in the comments below in my opinion the best anime artist can also draw realistic stuff but it takes a lot of time to learn that so like i recommend trying to learn both if your interested in drawing anime really well i'm using a basic brush with hardness set down to zero%
if you want to give your hair texture, you could try something else if you feel like the hair needs some more contrast you can create levels as an adjustment layer and set it to clipping mask more around the triangles until you find what you like i'm going to merge down the adjustment layers and continue painting if you want to make the line art look nicer you can add more values to it i hope you liked this tutorial
